lyrics

Congratulations, they said, you’re expecting twins
I see twenty fingers, and twenty little toes
If you want to know boy or girl, here’s some advice
When it comes to buying clothes, buy pink and blue Babygros.

With the babies in my arms, I made them a vow
I’d treat them both the same, and that’s no lie
And though they’re both my own, I wanted those kids to know
I hoped they’d both fly high, to reach right up to the sky.

They went to school, and to college, and started good careers
Got married, had kids, their lives fulfilled
But looming on the horizon, dementia came calling
My girl’s husband became ill, plans became stilled

As he regressed into illness, she reduced her hours
Until it came that he couldn’t be left alone
from working an eight-hour day, to 24 hour care
saving us all the cost, but it came with a different cost

Carers cry but no one’s listening
Legislation overlooks their basic rights
Love helps them soldier on with the weight of a boulder on
They fight their loved ones’ fight, giving care day and night.

Years they passed and my daughter found it harder just to cope
Caring day and night, was such a strain
She grew thin, her cheeks grew pale, from losing so much sleep
More worry and more bills, and his illness went downhill

Stress eventually took its toll, she fell ill as well
More help along the way was surely missed
Now both of them in the hospital, it costs a tidy sum
Support did not exist, now they’re numbers on a list

Carers cry but no one’s listening
Legislation overlooks their basic rights
Love helps them soldier on with the weight of a boulder on
They fight their loved ones’ fight, giving care day and night.

It’s such a sad refrain, human rights go down the drain
she never got respite, yet the Government sleeps at night

Carers cry but is anyone listening?
Legislation overlooks their basic rights
Love helps them soldier on with the weight of a boulder on
They fight their loved ones’ fight, giving care day and night.

They fight their loved ones’ fight, giving care day and night.

Where would our loved ones be...without carers like you and me?
